Question #7 (two parts)

Question: Many cities and states are starting to require new homes or re-landscaped lawns to be no more than 25 - 30% turf and the rest xeriscape or appropriate landscape for the area. Do you feel it is important for the city to be proactive in water conservation?

Answer: Yes we should be proactive. The fact is, we live in a desert and we should behave like we live in a desert.

Question: Would you encourage the adoption of policies and practices relating to water conservation and the value of regionally appropriate landscapes for new homes going in as well as encouraging existing homeowners to replace lawns with regionally appropriate landscapes as they can?

Answer: Yes although certain drought resistant grasses can also be included in appropriate landscaping designs. No one should be forced to rip-and-replace existing landscaping. The reduction of water use has a negative side-effect of reduced water revenue per household so we need to under stand this.

I commented that when we landscaped our home we did so in an effort to reduce our water usage and the resulting expense.
